How many difficulties you should overcome from Chinese local school to British public school?
Overseas studying application is a process of filling in educational difference at home and abroad. This is the reason why students from international schools are easier to apply British boarding school. For students who are educated by domestic educational system, you must set aside enough time to get well prepared for the application if your target school is a top one.
Sophia decided to go to study in the UK on January 2016. She took a whole year to prepare for the entrance examination of Sixth Form.
Academic tutoring from zero basis
Students must pick 3-4 subjects in advance and pass the assessment on these subjects in order to enter into Sixth Form. Although Sophia was studying in the top secondary school in China, she was educated under Chinese educational system and it would be challenging for her to learn English-teaching academic subjects.
Moreover, she is an extremely independent girl. She chose Maths, Economics and History. Though Chinese students are good at maths, this was not easy for a Chinese student, because economics and history requires a high level of English language, and the content of these subjects was totally new to her.
Facing such a great challenge, Sophie and BE consultant did not flinch. We chose the most suitable tutors for Sophie. In January, she came to have one-to-one English class each weekend. At April, the frequency of her class at BE increased sharply. In every afternoon from Monday and Thursday, she kept coming to BE to have Economics, History and Maths classes. With good English foundation, the girl paid 120% efforts in learning new-defined subjects and kept improving her English language.
Oxford International Summer School establish international foundation
Except for English and subject knowledge, one of the very important for filling the difference between foreign and domestic educational system is that children are placed in the environment of having 24 hours English immersion education.
Hence, Sophie, a consultant from BE Education, applied a place at Oxford Summer School for Sophia. It is a truly international summer school experience where children from over 90 countries study together for 4 weeks, including English and academic subject development. Sophia is a clever young girl. She achieved a very good grade at the end of summer school.
The excellent result greatly helped her in the further application of Charterhouse.
UKiset is the prior entry test of Charterhouse Sixth Form. Candidates cannot take part in further examinations unless they get through the pre-test. Unfortunately, the UKiset became the largest crisis throughout the whole application.
Sophia’s UKiset result was not very well. Although her maths, writing and non-verbal reasoning gained a quite high score, her verbal reasoning result failed to meet the requirement of Charterhouse. UKiset is the first step to filter the right candidates for Charterhouse entrance, and thus she would be disqualified from the application if she failed the test.
The situation was a real emergency, but Sophie did not give up. She wrote many emails to Charterhouse admission officer, with attachments proving her good language ability, including school reports and teacher’s evaluation from Oxford Summer School. All these explained why she did not achieve a good score in the verbal reasoning part, and added that her English level was much higher than what appeared on the paper.
Finally, Charterhouse admission officers were convinced by Sophie and accepted her application. It was not until then that Sophie started the required application process.
The following steps were smooth, facilitated by BE consultant’s effective coaching. Her scores in Economics, History and Math were quite high. Her school visit and interview were also smooth. One month later, she received the offer from Charterhouse.
