As an internationally acclaimed and respected artist, Francis Bacon was commented by The Times at his death 'no other post-war painter transformed British art with as much energy, flair and obsessive conviction'. As an internationally acclaimed and respected artist, Francis Bacon was commented by The Times at his death 'no other post-war painter transformed British art with as much energy, flair and obsessive conviction.' And this world renowned artist was educated in 1924 at Dean Close School where he began his first and only school education experience.

Dean Close

Established in 1886, Dean Close School is one of the oldest independent schools in the UK set in 50 acres of a lovely parkland in the centre of Cheltenham, about one hour drive from Oxford. As a co-educational day and boarding school, it has a balanced percentage of half girls and half boys, providing continuity of education from age 2+ to 18.

As a school that has educated an array of great artists like Francis, Dean Close places high value on Art. Pupils at Dean Close are encouraged to be ambitious and independent in their creative responses and opportunities on offer include ceramics, painting, printmaking, photography and IT.

Besides Art, Drama and Theatre is also culturally vital to the life of Dean Close. In addition to subject-specific teachers, it also invites notable music professors to teach various instrument lessons. Production and performing opportunities are available to all students.

Dean Close offers a varied and challenging diet of plays. Shakespeare's play, the greatest in the English language and in Western Literature, is regularly performed, most recently Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, Macbeth, A Midsummer Night's Dream and King Lear. These performances often take place in the Bacon Theatre, a purpose-built 560-seat auditorium, with huge stage and hi-tech equipment.

Visitors to Dean Close regularly comment on the atmosphere, saying how warm and friendly they find it and it is felt that this positive environment can be attributed directly to the Christian heart and principles of the school. Many students, with their brothers and sisters, have gone through the school, and often follow on their fathers and mothers before them.

The School has about 300 boarders, this means the Chinese students have the opportunity to mix with traditional English boarders and day pupils, and really getting a sense of the UK culturally.

Another thing to be noted about Dean Close is its unique teaching style. Just as the School declares: we value every person, regarding them as uniquely created and loved by God, courses at Dean Close are designed based on pupils' capabilities and needs to inspire their intellectual curiosity and enthusiasm, and a tutor is allocated for each pupil to oversee their academic and pastoral progress.

The main purpose of the Dean Close curriculum is to offer a challenging and balanced academic education, equipping pupils for the opportunities and demands of their future lives.

Dean Close also shows excellence in academic results. A majority of pupils attend Russell Group universities, with almost one in six achieving places at Oxbridge in recent years. Notable alumni include British wildlife conservationist & author George Adamson, Poet James Flecker, Samer Majali(CEO of Gulf Air), Brian Jones (Rolling Stones), Tom Johnson (England Rugby Captain), etc.
