A few weeks ago several BE employees traveled to the US and visited a variety of school, including world renowned universities such as Columbia, Northeastern, New York University, etc. In the next few weeks, we are going to share what they have discovered on their trip. Let's first start with the New York University, the dream school for most college-bound students.

Based in New York's trend downtown, and with tentacles spread throughout the city, NYU is a world-class university in its own right and boasts one of the world’s most dynamic environments for arts, music and culture.

During the visit to NYU, admissions officer at NYU delivered an info session and answered application questions for us.

"In and of the ciy"

Founded in 1831 when most of schools in the US were on hill overlooking the rest of the city, NYU is found to be the first downtown university, being part of the urban. As NYU proudly states, "in and of the city".

"We have no gates, and we are not separated from the city. When students are walking from their residence halls to the classrooms or academic centers or students union, they are walking through the New York City. They are walking with other New Yorkers, with tourists. There are no gates in our campus, and that's something we are very proud of. And that something should excite the students. For students who like the idea of having a traditional campus, NYU is just not the good fit for them."

And some may wonder: "So you don’t have a campus, what’s it like not to have a community?". "That's a question really frustrates us because we really believe that we have a great community. It's just doesn't look like the traditional college campus that you grow up thinking about. We do not have that enclosed campus. I'd like to say we have a very strong sense of community, it's just not brought together by geography, not by walls, gates. You're brought together by academic, intellectual and social interests, by students in the classes, in the residence halls, and the other students you engage in class activities."

Premier Study Abroad Programme

Study abroad at NYU remains one of the nation's premier programs for students who wish to gain worldly perspectives on a myriad of 21st century issues. From the moment accepted students arrive on campus as freshman, they can choose to study abroad for the remainder of the year at almost every accredited institution in the world. Students who are already enrolled in a specific college, for example, the Stern School of Business, have the opportunity to study at leading business universities to discover the intellectual, cultural, and social life of another country.

"So in 2005, NYU really became a leader at that point in study abroad. In that period, we are sending more students abroad than any other schools in the US. And we still hold that title." NYU also has campus in Abu Dhabi and Shanghai, so students interested in these sites are able to apply to NYU Abu Dhabi and spend all four years there.

Admission process of NYU Shanghai

Gaokao score is a major criteria NYU Shanghai uses to evaluate candidates. So if a Chinese student want to apply to NYU Shanghai, they are going to provide their Gaokao scores, even if they are from Taiwan, Hong Kong or Macau. "Because ultimately if you have a Chinese passport, you have to take the Gaokao."
