September 1st is the day when a new term begins in most Chinese schools, also a starting point to begin the planning of a child's education future if parents want to send them abroad.

Application to junior high school

If the child is moving to junior high school, then he or she could apply for the Year 9 entry in a UK school where he could have a complete and thorough experience of British education, which gives him sufficient time to adjust to studying and living in the UK as well as the edge for applying to a top university.

And what preparations might be done to apply for Year 9 entry in the UK?

For International students at this age who speak English as second language, normally UK schools do not require high level of English, but the key thing for them is to find their strengths and interests during a five year study period in a UK school and become the person they want to be.

To choose the right fit for that, the child needs to match two things essentially: the level of English and personality (although the English test is the critical thing, maths and science may also be tested by many schools); the talents or specialties such as in sport or art because UK schools would love to see that.

Application to senior high school

If the child is moving to a senior high school which is called Sixth Form in the UK, then he may consider securing a place in Year 12-13 and studying the A-level curriculum.

British education system is quite different from the Chinese system: the former system would firstly require the Year 11 group to choose 3-4 A level subjects which he'd like to pursue in Colleges or he's interested in. Some schools have 20-30 subjects on offer. In terms of the testing method, each subject has 6 examinations on a number grading basis (full score being 100), and the sum of the 6 scores are the final score of the individual subjects.

To apply for sixth form entry, then the level of English language and academic capability matter much more than extra-curricular activities. The applicant needs to decide the 3-4 A levels he's going to study and show to the schools an appropriate level of English and academic abilities.

To summarize, a clear understanding of the English level and academic abilities is essential to find the best fit for the child. The UK schools' methods to assess and evaluate an applicant vary a lot from what you may think for a Chinese school – good scores on the script may not make much difference.

For Chinese students who want to know their language and academic level, the most efficient and simple way is to attend the ability test recognized by UK schools, so that the students apply to a suitable school based on the test results.

The 2017 China Summit of the Association of Leading Independent Schools is to be held in Beijing and Shanghai on Sept. 15 and Sept. 17 respectively. Students who want to take the interview should attend a pre-test at least 1 week before the activity begins.

Can't miss the opportunity to get an overview of your ability especially when a good test score means a face-to-face interview with UK school admission officers !
