Interview with Charterhouse offer holder: how did the year-long application change me?

Added on: 2017-04-27Share on :

“I was not good at words, but after a year’s coaching, I grew more confident and more inspired to express.” , told by Sophia who recently admitted by Charterhouse School. But what I see in front of me is a glowing girl who speaks frankly with assurance

Sophia studied in Shanghai Foreign Language School, one of the top public schools in China, and the school she is going to study in is Charterhouse, one of the nine oldest public schools in the UK. It started to recruit girls in Year 12, those who have strong personalities and dare to express their thoughts in front of the boys, and also not afraid of contradicting the boys.

Sophia speaks softly and doesn’t look very aggressive. But she is strong-minded, confident and has clear plan for her life. All these characters are the favorite of the admission officers. She is the kind of girl who is soft outside but hard inside. These qualities are not born, but built up in the process of the one-year application.

Positive reinforcement

It was Sophia’s first time to get in touch with British education that in the beginning of 2016, BE consultant Sophie and other teachers in BE Education started to coach her English and other A-Level courses of Economy and History she chose. Sophia studied in a middle school in the system, so when she first participated in these courses she needed to accept not only the full English teaching method and the deficiency of Economy and History knowledge, but also the English style teaching method.

“Foreign teachers don’t have such high requirements, compared with the Chinese teachers. They will always praise you. So at that time, I was not sure and don’t know what’s my level among the candidates.” Sophia smiled bashfully when she remembered the nervousness of that time. “Every teacher in BE Education has different background and experiences and they let me know a lot of interesting things in the world. They have equal discussions with me and inspire my potential. I quite enjoy this kind of teaching method.

Positive reinforcement achieves remarkable success in the girl. Sophia has overcome all the language and academic shortages during the one-year tutorship and has gained high points in the entrance examinations of Charterhouse. More importantly, in the long-term British education method, Sophia’s potential got further developed and the girl became more optimistic and confident which laid the foundation for her good scores achieved in Oxford Summer School.

No Wrong Answers

The Oxford Summer School, Sophie registered for, played an important role on application. Sophia stayed there for a whole month and experienced the British boarding life in advance, and also learned a lot of things.

“In China, teachers tend to convey knowledge through lecturing, but British teachers encourage us to speak and express our own ideas, no wrong answers. I also tried debates and made a speech which I had never done before. It’s really lucky to attend such a summer school.” Sophia is clinging to the colorful life in Oxford Summer School.

During the one-month Oxford Summer School, Sophia learned not only knowledge, but also a brand new learning experience. We don’t have so-called standard answers many time and the teachers can actually be your friends. She understands that when everyone freely expresses themselves, more will appear in the collision, so she could adopt a peaceful attitude toward the following school interview.

“I think I can bring something different to your school”

The interview of Charterhouse was rigorous. There were two male teachers sitting in front of Sophia with a feeling of negotiation and they told her that two years in Charterhouse would have a lot of changes and she needed to get on track as soon as possible.

Sophia showed her strong confidence in front of the admission officer and easily talked about her hobbies. She said that she had learned piano for ten years and wanted to join the Dancing Club, and recently she was learning guitar. She talked about the plan for her life clearly about what major she wants to choose in the university, what to learn in graduate school and even about what kind of industry to enter in the future.

The applicant from China said earnestly in front of the admission officers that “I am a student in mainland China, receiving education in a system totally different from yours. I think I can bring something different to your school.”

These words won favor of the admission officers easily and she accepted admission of Charterhouse finally.

The girl in front of me now is totally different. She is neither humble nor pushy and believes everything can be overcome by herself.

The time of studying aboard can change a person, but actually, you have already changed in the during the preparation process. When you’re learning English and trying to overcome other shortages, you get efficiency; when you’re preparing for the interview, you get confidence; and when you’re waiting for the offer, you get strong.

When you finally get through the long and hard time and look back, you may surprisingly find that you have changed into another person, a better and stronger version of yourself.
