FROM EMMA

As president of BE’s study abroad division, I have held a number of jobs and seen a number of perspectives related to the study abroad experience. Not only have I managed a team of Chinese consultants, but I worked as a consultant and guardian myself for many years, personally handling many clients. As such, I’ve had the great opportunity to visit a wealth of schools and I’ve experienced a lot of the challenges Chinese students face overseas from managing their time, to making friends, to language issues.

Chinese students bring a lot to British and American schools. They are generally hard working and ambitious. They also bring a different perspective to the school community and add cultural diversity to schools. Given that the current generation of students are living in a very globalised world, having a diverse international population at schools and universities allows all students to have the opportunity to gain a genuinely global outlook.

Chinese students do have their struggles though. They worry about asking for help, or sometimes feel silly speaking English if not ‘perfect’. They can become overly obsessed with grades due to, in a large part, parental pressures. What I have found over the years is that when students and parents are properly prepared for overseas study, the above issues are far less disruptive and students integrate better.

What is more, students who perform best are students who are at the schools which best match their personality, learning style, interests and support needs. Students who are comfortable at school, are also comfortable in their own skin and tend to be happier, more confident and more robust. This philosophy underpins every decision we make at BE where we endeavor to match students to the most suitable schools for them. We do this by getting to know our students and schools very well, understanding schools’ entry requirements and atmosphere, and getting a feel for our students’ learning style, support needs and English level.

We also endeavor to prepare students and parents for the overseas study experience so that the move abroad is less of a shock to both sides of the family. We then stay at their sides through their academic career, offering support and guidance when needed, to ensure students, parents and schools are ultimately happy.

Whilst BE started out providing services to the UK, we have since added US services as we saw demand grow from our existing clients. I myself have studied in the US and appreciate the openness and flexibility that the US system provides, especially at college level. Our team of US consultants hails from some of best colleges and schools in that country so I am proud to say our US results are also stellar and growing stronger each year.
