Summer Course Case Study: William

Added on: 2017-04-28Share on :

Deerfield Academy, one of the top boarding schools and oldest high schools in the United States, has only a 13% acceptance rate. This is one of the lowest high school acceptance rates in the United States. Since it is a very prestigious boarding high school, Deerfield also runs one of the most unique summer programs among US boarding schools, called The Experimentory, which emphasizes students’ development in creativity and character. Since, the application process was very intricate and competitive, we would like to showcase BE’s very own William who, in less than 2 months’ time, successfully completed the application and was admitted within three days of his application’s submission. The application process was very intricate and competitive, which is why we would like to showcase BE’s very own William. In less than 2 months’ time, he successfully completed the application cycle and was admitted within three days of his application’s submission.

Tips for Applying to Top Summer Program

Apply as early as possible

American junior boarding schools and high schools, especially top-ranked institutions, are very popular for their summer schools. For example, Eaglebrook is especially popular. Therefore, spots at Eaglebrook’s summer program are already all filled approximately one to two weeks after the application is open. William began preparing his application in December of last year, and this only left him with a short period of two months to complete and submit it.

For his application William needed to complete one essay and two creative projects from scratch. While he was able to successfully complete his application, it is never a good idea to wait until the last minute. The more time you have to work on your application, the less stressful the application process and the more precise and careful you can be.

Double check all parts of the application before submission

Essays are a very important part of each summer program application because they offer each school a way to get to know applicants better. Among six distinct prompts, each applicant must respond to three total, with the first being a mandatory essay. This prompt asks students to define creativity and character in their own terms. For the other two responses, which are supplementary, the applicant can pick two of the remaining five prompts to respond to. In addition, the applicant can respond in any format they see fit. William chose to respond to his second prompt by writing a story, and his third prompt by creating a PowerPoint presentation. If a student elects to omit this section, it is estimated that he or she will be rejected 99% of the time.

The self-selected prompts for the Experimentory encourage applicants to explore abstract concepts while also allowing admission officers to simultaneously gage each applicants’ English ability. William is already a very creative and imaginative student, so when his natural talent was combined with help from BE’s foreign consultants, he was able to easily and efficiently work with the consultants come up with unique and interesting responses.

BE’s foreign consultants helped William brainstorm creative writing ideas and gave instruction on how to present his academic and personal strengths in a succinct and well worded format. In the self-selected prompts, William did not immediately understand how to approach each topic. However, capitalizing on the inspiration from his foreign consultant, William used his own whimsical daydreams of time and space travel to create a creative PowerPoint, with pictures, music, and animation. This unique way to answer the question helped William’s application stand out at Deerfield Academy.

Letters of Recommendation Matter

Perhaps obtaining a letter of recommendation is a trivial headache in the minds of most Chinese parents, but in Western schools, a letter of recommendation is very important. Admissions officers use this aspect of the application process to better understand how teachers and mentors perceive the student. Thus, the letter of recommendation absolutely cannot be ignored.

BE foreign consultants understand the vital importance of letters of recommendation in the overall profile of an applicant, and thus informed William's parents of the importance of this step. Finally, William's parents urgently reached out to his teachers and asked them to help support William’s application. Each of William’s teachers wrote a letter of recommendation detailing William’s strengths and credentials, and there is no doubt this helped give admission officers a better more well-rounded view of William’s character.

Final Thoughts

Overall, diligent time management, meticulous preparation and editing of application essays, plus a shining letter of recommendation all contributed to William's acceptance to one of the top summer programs in the United States.
