"I actually wanted to stay there longer"
Almost every international student in a foreign land goes through a time of being homesick. However, Aimee, who went abroad for a summer camp, seems to have not been bothered by this problem at all. "I didn't miss home, really. I actually wanted to stay there longer."
Aimee met lots of foreign friends and classmates at Emma Willard School. At first she was worried that she wouldn't be able to freely communicate with her teammates, as she was the only student in her team who speak Chinese.
Gradually Aimee's worry melted away. She found that all of her teammates were being very nice to her: they slowed down their speaking, and patiently explained their meanings if necessary. The Summer Camp had over 200 students from all over the world. Occasionally you can hear them speak their own languages in private. Aimee found that quite interesting, and she made a few new friends from different countries.
“So many fun and interesting stuff. I even become a friend of the headmaster”
Challenge Island, Bead Shop, Hip Pop, Volleyball……these activities has kept Aimee fulfilled and busy. Aimee talked about a self-directed and -acted MV which she'd never forget. "We chose the song, we choose the spots, and we talked about how and what scenes to be presented. We had a teacher there filming us, who also gave a lot of useful advices. It's absolutely a unique experience."
The activities and classes were well-organized. The teachers all were great and committed to work. "We even needed to sign in for meal. It is to make sure every student in the Camp have meal on time. The teacher responsible for our accommodation lived and ate with us. In the evening, we played games and made cakes together. It's more like friends, not teacher and students. ”
Plus, Aimee also got invited by the headmaster to have dinner with him and other teachers. "The headmaster is so amiable, and she also encouraged us to do barbecue and toast marshmallows. Julia and James, and two academic directors, even picked food onto our plate. That's so sweet."
“I'll be back”
"My mother always thought that I should go to a domestic university, maybe getting a master degree and then getting an office job." But Aimee now has her own plan. As an outgoing girl, she finds herself prefer going to the US to experience learning environment there. And this summer camp experience strengthens her determination to go to the US.
Now Aimee is preparing for application to American high schools. She's prepping for TOEFL, SSAT, and also attended the Vericant interview. The preparation process comprises lots of hard work and causes pressure as well as anxiety. Luckily, Aimee's faith is strong enough to deal with that: "When I get tired, I tell myself I can't give up, because I really want to go study abroad."
A summer camp experience of one month brings Aimee not only knowledge, interests, friends, but also independence and direction in life. We believe it would be a time that she would treasure for life.
