Only a few people are eligible, or fortunate, enough to answer such a question. In six short months Cathy Wang, however, got five offers from five top private schools in the UK: King's School Canterbury, Canford, Headington,Oundle and Shrewsbury.
Three months to learn British science curricula, no problem!
In the seventh grade Cathy didn't do Physics and Chemistry, and only introductory Biology. In Cathy's words, she needed a "massive amount" of tutoring in science to pass the UK entrance exams. But in just one month, Cathy quickly mastered an effective method and pace of learning. At the same time, her logical and clear notes helped her to progress quickly. As a result of her training, Cathy was not overwhelmed by examination questions.
She learnt how to analyse and summarize them effectively, and found the exam techniques best for each school, which greatly improved the efficiency of her preparation.
Why did Cathy choose King's Canterbury in the end, even though she was highly praised by the Shrewsbury interviewer?
Five offers from five schools arrived one after another and Cathy had to make a decision. She finally chose King's School Canterbury for the following reasons. First of all, the campus life appealed to Cathy.
Secondly, with excellent academic performance and an artistic culture, the school encourages every student to innovate and show their individuality. In addition, the school has built a lively and excellent community for the students, encompassing many important aspects of campus life: music, drama and art. Each year, the school also dedicates one entire week to a cultural festival called "King's week".
It's worth mentioning that Cathy's parents only played "marginal" roles in the application process. All major decisions were made by Cathy herself.
Useful tips for academic and mental problems!
In just half a year, Cathy received five offers from top schools. And here are some of her tips.
Learn from each interview
It's necessary to make a summary after each interview. A list of positive and negative areas could be very helpful. On the list, you should also note down the unusual questions asked by the interviewer and what more you could say about each question.
Finding the examination pattern
In her preparation for the examinations, Cathy never struggled because she was able to discover the pattern each school used. Based on these patterns, Cathy was able to engage in targeted preparation.
Make full use of one's strengths
Everybody has their strengths and weaknesses. We just need to make the best use of our strengths within the given time and improve in the areas we find challenging. Seeking perfection across a range of different academic subjects is not so rational in this regard. Another important thing is to look after your mental health through the process.
Find a role model for oneself
Cathy's role model is Victor Wang, whom she met at a BE Christmas event. Victor was admitted to Winchester, Harrow, Tonbridge and Rugby School at the same time in 2019. His victory earned him the nickname of "offer magnet". Victor is now majoring in Economics, which Cathy also wishes to pursue in college. Naturally, Victor has become Cathy's role model.
Self-encouragement
Cathy has an interesting way of encouraging herself. Whenever negative emotions emerged during the application process, she would watch the promo videos of the schools and imagine studying and living there. After that, she felt energetic and optimistic again.
