Primary Education runs from age 5 to 11 in the UK. In the independent school system, students will start pre-prep in Year 1 (age 5) and then prep school in Year 3 (age 7). Students in this age group follow the Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 national curriculum.
Students complete the first 2 years of senior education at prep school, in Years 7 ( age 11 ) and 8, before moving to a senior school in Year 9 ( age 13 ). In Year 9 they will complete the final year of Key Stage 3, then move onto the GCSE curriculum, which has formal exams at the end of Year 11.
This represents the final 2 years of high school in the UK, which is known as the Sixth Form. In these 2 years, students will take 3 or 4 subjects as they prepare for their A Levels, for which they will take exams at the end of Year 13, before moving on to university. Students are also able to take the International Baccalaureate (IB), which is an alternative to A-levels, during this stage.
Students will study for an undergraduate degree as their qualification in Higher Education. In the UK, these generally last for 3 years. If students wish to continue with further study, they can then move on to a 1-year master’s degree after completing their undergraduate studies.
