Admissions Preparation

Prep-schools were developed in the early 19th century to prepare boys for studying at leading public schools. Since then, they have branched out and now cater to all children between the ages of 8 to 13.

For many international students, entry into a prep school is their first experience of studying abroad and a stepping stone to boarding school.

Parents of students who are aiming for the absolute best senior schools should strongly consider the prep school route, as access to prep schools’ own school networks enhances the chances of senior school admission.

Prep Schools benefit from small class sizes and exceptional pastoral care whilst at the same time offering the brilliant extracurricular opportunities that UK schools are so famous for.

Planning your study abroad

Planning Properly

Planning ahead is key if you are seriously considering one of the UK’s elite schools for your child. Registrations need to be completed by the end of Year 5 and school entrance exams take place in Years 6 & 7.

The biggest entry point for boys and co-ed schools is Year 9, for all-girls schools there is a large intake in Year 7 and then a smaller intake for Year 9. Schools also offer a Sixth Form intake for students starting in Year 12. This is a much more competitive process than the Year 9 application because there are far fewer places available.

Helen Dalgleish | Education Consultant, Beijing

Helen has been working in education since graduating in 2014 and in this time believes she has seen it all. From leading classes of energetic 5-year-olds to coaching university applicants in essay techniques, the breadth of her experience helps her quickly identify the ways a student learns best and ensure lesson content is delivered in the most effective way possible. Having taught UK-curriculum maths, English and science to well over 50 pupils, Helen is well-versed in the topics which appear on 11, 13 and 16+ entrance papers. As a consultant, she works closely with BE tutors to ensure her students are thoroughly prepared for entrance assessments. Her proudest tutoring moment to date was when the most work-shy student she’d ever sat across a textbook from was accepted to Headington Girls. As an Oxford graduate, Helen is often asked for tips on Oxbridge admissions. If she has one piece of advice, it is to identify and cultivate passions early. She is not ashamed to admit that aged-13 she was researching Roman history for fun, volunteering at a local museum and graffitiing her bedroom walls with Latin slogans. Since joining BE as a consultant, she has been working to develop similar passions in her students, with one eye on Oxbridge but the other on the enrichment and motivation this can bring their studies as a whole.
